"Akabeko" is a traditional folk craft from the Aizu region of Fukushima Prefecture, known as the "bull of good fortune" or "protective bull." It has been beloved by the people of Aizu as a charm against evil and to ward off plagues.
When you gently touch its neck, the head of the Akabeko wobbles adorably, and its rounded, endearing shape has made it a popular item, even overseas.

• What is Akabeko?
A long time ago, a great earthquake struck the Aizu region, causing the collapse of the Kokuuzodo Hall at Enzoji Temple. Afterward, the temple was rebuilt on a cliff, and bulls were used to transport timber. Many of the bulls fell due to the rugged terrain, but one red-colored bull continued to work tirelessly to the end. This bull became known as "Akabeko" and was embraced by the people.
In honor of this legend, Akabeko folk toys were created with the wish for "endurance and robust health." Red is considered a color that wards off evil spirits, and the round patterns on the body symbolize scars from a plague that was overcome.
